During this month, the Africa Food System Forum in Dakar, the African Union (AU), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), the Global Phosphorus Institute (GPI), farmer organizations, research institutions, and development partners launched the African Platform for Phosphorus for Food Security.
The platform will act as a continental coordination mechanism to map phosphorus flows, enhance policy coherence, and promote the sustainable use of resources. It also aims to mobilize investment, improve soil health, and engage farmers in advancing food security.
With the GPI serving as a technical secretariat, the platform will be operated under AU and REC leadership. It will seek to address the paradox of Africa’s widespread phosphorus deficiency, despite its significant phosphate rock reserves.
