On the 22nd of October, the Institute for Advanced Studies hosted the inaugural conference of its scientific resident, Professor Hasnaa Chennaoui Aoudjehane, entitled “Meteorites of Morocco: From Desert Discoveries to Planetary Insights”, within the University’s Campus in Benguerir.
The seminar explored how Morocco’s meteorite discoveries contribute to planetary science, from tracing the origins of heavy elements and dating the Solar System to understanding Earth’s water and organic matter.
Prof. Chennaoui highlighted notable Moroccan meteorites such as Tirhert (2014) and Tissint (2011), illustrating their significance for understanding planetary formation and the emergence of life.
The conference also emphasized Morocco’s growing global role in meteoritics, supported by scientific institutions, field research networks, and outreach initiatives. Through the ATTARIK Foundation and the “Météorites, messagères du ciel” museum in Casablanca, Professor Chennaoui continues to connect research, education, and public engagement, advancing knowledge of the Solar System’s origins.
