On the 12th of November, the Institute for Advanced Studies organized a conference titled “Decolonizing Knowledge: Towards a Moroccan Sociology of Emigration and Immigration” with Dr. Montassir Sakhi at UM6P Campus in Benguerir.
During his lecture, Dr. Sakhi examined the ongoing dominance of Northern paradigms in the social sciences and advocated for a sociology emerging from the Global South one capable of revealing the epistemic power structures that influence knowledge production on migration.
Using migration sociology as a framework, Dr. Sakhi proposed a decolonial approach that centers the lived experiences of migration and its emotional, social, and symbolic dimensions. Concepts such as departure, ghorba (estrangement), mourning, and inequalities of recognition served as key points to explore how Moroccan perspectives can contribute to reshaping global narratives on emigration and immigration.
