On the 28th of January, the Institute for Advanced Studies hosted a lecture titled “The Lens as Archive: Identifying and Documenting Forgotten Heritage in Morocco” led by François Beaurain, Resident Artist at IAS.
Drawing on research conducted since 2016, the lecture focused on documenting often-overlooked built heritage, including cinemas, workers’ housing estates, industrial and mining sites, infrastructure, and former military sites.
The discussion examined photographic techniques for identifying and documenting sites and raised questions about future developments amid increasing pressures and changes. Conversations with students, researchers, and members of the University community highlighted the role of photography in research, memory, and heritage preservation.
