“By US – Earth MatterLab” Explored Earth as a Sustainable Construction Material

As part of the By US Weekend initiative, the Sustainbuilding Student Club, in collaboration with Student Organizations, Leadership and Engagement (SOLE), organized “By US – Earth MatterLab: Rediscovering Earth as a Building Material” at the University’s Campus in Benguerir.

The workshop examined the use of earth as a traditional and sustainable building material through hands-on activities. Participants handled, mixed, compressed, and shaped raw soil to assess its texture, plasticity, resistance, and its response to water and pressure.

By creating compressed earth blocks and test panels, students analyzed structural and sensory properties, linking material behavior to architectural applications and eco-friendly design approaches.
