On the 19th of November, the Institute of Science, Technology, and Innovation, in collaboration with the College of Chemical Sciences and Engineering (CCSE), organized a conference titled ‘‘Photoredox Catalysis Applied to C(SP3)–H Bond Alkylation’’, featuring Professor Jean-Marc Vincent from University of Bordeaux - CNRS, France.
The conference gathered researchers, PhD candidates, and students for a scientific session on advances in photoredox catalysis.
During his lecture, Prof. Vincent presented recent work on dual photoredox and transition-metal catalysis, focusing on copper- and benzophenone-based photocatalytic systems that enable direct functionalization of C(sp³)–H bonds. He also covered strategies using highly fluorinated photoredox catalysts combined with chloride ions as hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) agents, highlighting their significance for efficiency, selectivity, and sustainability in synthetic applications.
The presentation was followed by a scientific discussion where participants examined potential uses of these methods in synthesizing complex molecules, enhancing selectivity, and exploring opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. The discussion also addressed broader impacts across fields such as medicinal chemistry, advanced materials, and green chemistry.
