UM6P Marked International Earth Day with a Focus on Climate and Sustainability

On the 22nd of April, University Mohammed VI Polytechnic marked International Earth Day alongside the global community. This moment underscores the urgency of today’s environmental challenges and the need for coordinated, impact-driven responses.

Environmental pressures continue to intensify. The United Nations indicates that global warming is on track to exceed the 1.5°C threshold, with significant implications for ecosystems and human systems. Air pollution affects over 90% of the world’s population, while approximately 11 million tons of plastic waste enter the oceans annually.

Across Africa, and particularly in Morocco, these challenges are both immediate and structural. The continent faces increasing climate variability, with more frequent droughts, land degradation, and pressure on natural resources. In Morocco, water scarcity, desertification, and coastal risks are key priorities, requiring integrated and forward-looking approaches to ensure resilience and sustainable development.

At UM6P, addressing these challenges is grounded in a science-driven approach that embeds sustainability across research and innovation. Through interdisciplinary projects, programs, and strategic collaborations, the University advances innovation in renewable energy, agriculture, and climate resilience. By translating research into real-world applications, UM6P contributes to scalable and sustainable impact across Morocco and the African continent.
