UM6P Reaffirms Its Commitment to Environmental Sustainability on World Environment Day

On June 5th, University Mohammed VI Polytechnic joined the international community in celebrating World Environment Day, a global occasion dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging action to protect the environment. This day serves as an opportunity to reflect on the growing environmental challenges facing our planet and to reaffirm the importance of collective engagement in building a more sustainable future.

Across the world, climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and increasing pressure on natural resources continue to affect ecosystems and societies alike. These challenges are particularly significant in regions such as Africa, where climate variability, water stress, and land degradation increasingly impact livelihoods, economic development, and environmental resilience.

At UM6P, sustainability is embedded in the University’s vision and activities. Through research, innovation, education, and partnerships, the University contributes to advancing practical solutions that address environmental challenges while supporting sustainable development. Among the many initiatives led across its ecosystem is an afforestation and carbon farming pilot launched in Benguerir, where more than 3,000 trees have been planted since 2018 to explore the carbon sequestration potential of drylands under arid conditions.

By translating research into the real world, UM6P supports environmental resilience and sustainable development in Morocco, Africa, and beyond.
